According to the Hindu Panchang, the Dwadashi Tithi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Adhik Maas is known as Adhik Krishna Dwadashi. This Tithi is considered especially dear to Lord Vishnu. Since the entire month of Adhik Maas is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is also known as Purushottama Maas, because one of the various names of Lord Vishnu is Purushottam. As mentioned in sacred texts such as the Padma Purana, Skanda Purana, Bhavishya Purana and Vishnu Dharmottara Purana, performing Dwadashi Upasana during Adhik Maas yields infinitely greater rewards than in ordinary months. Taking holy dip in a sacred river and chanting the names and Mantras of Lord Vishnu on this day are considered especially meritorious. In the Hindu calendar system, an extra lunar month is inserted periodically to balance the difference between the solar and lunar years. This additional month is called Adhik Maas. It is also known by other names such as Mal Maas, Adhika Maas and Londa Maas.
