According to the Hindu Panchang, the Dwadashi Tithi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of the Adhik Maas is known as Adhik Shukla Dwadashi. The Adhik Maas, i.e., extra lunar month is an additional month inserted into the Hindu calendar to align the lunar year with the solar year. It is also known by other names such as Mal Maas, Purushottama Maas and Londa Maas. This sacred month appears approximately once every three years in the Hindu calendar and is considered especially dear to Lord Vishnu. Among the many names of Lord Vishnu, one is Purushottama. Since this month is dedicated to Him, it is called Purushottama Maas. The Dwadashi Vrat observed during this month is considered exceptionally meritorious and bestows far greater rewards than other similar vows.
