Bhadrachalam is believed to be part of the Dandakaranya forest where Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spent time during their fourteen-year exile, and the site where the sage Bhadra Maharshi performed penance and was blessed with a vision of Rama — giving the region its name. According to temple tradition, a tribal woman named Pokala Dammakka, a descendant of Sabari, discovered idols of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana hidden in an anthill after a dream, and began worship at a small mandapam. In the 17th century, Kancharla Gopanna, the local tax official (Tahsildar) and an ardent Rama devotee known as Bhakta Ramadasu, used government treasury funds to build/renovate a grand temple here. Imprisoned by the Qutb Shahi ruler Tana Shah (Abul Hasan) for this, Ramadasu was miraculously freed after Rama and Lakshmana, in disguise, are said to have repaid the debt in gold — coins and a necklace from this episode are preserved at the temple. Ramadasu went on to compose devotional Telugu songs (including the Dasarathi Satakam) that remain widely sung.
