According to Sthalapurana, sage Vyasa Maharshi resided here after the Mahabharata war; following instructions from the divine mother, he collected three handfuls of sand from the Godavari River, from which emerged the idols of Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Mahakali — making the temple a rare Tri-Shakti Peetham housing all three goddesses. The place, originally called "Vasara" after Vyasa, evolved into "Basara." The Goddess is also known as Kumarachalavasini, enshrined on Kumarachala Parvatha.
