The temple is dedicated to Lord Rajagopalaswamy, a form of Lord Krishna depicted as the divine king (Raja Gopala means "King of Cowherds"). The temple has a rich history dating back to the Chola period, with significant contributions from the Chola kings, particularly Kulothunga Chola III in the 12th-13th century. The temple complex is one of the largest in Tamil Nadu, covering about 23 acres, and is renowned for its magnificent Dravidian architecture. The temple's main deity is a standing form of Krishna holding a conch (shankh) and discus (chakra), with his consort Rukmini Devi by his side. The temple is famous for the legend where Lord Krishna appeared as a cowherd boy and saved the town from a raging fire by swallowing it. The temple houses one of the largest temple chariots (ratham) in India, made of gold-plated wood and measuring about 96 feet in height.
