About Sri Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Temple , Thirukkozhi (Uraiyur)
Sri Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Temple located at Thirukkozhi (Woraiyur) in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, is the 2nd Divya Desam praised by Thirumangai Alvar in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. In ancient Sangam literature, Woraiyur was known as Kozhiyur or Thirukkozhi because a valorous rooster (Kozhi) once repulsed and subdued a war elephant by divine intervention, symbolizing the spiritual potency of this sacred soil.
The sthala is renowned for the divine romance of Sri Kamalavalli Nachiyar, the daughter of Chola King Nanda Chola. Having vowed only to marry Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam, She engaged in severe penance here. Pleased by Her devotion, Lord Ranganatha arrived in procession as Azhagiya Manavalan (the Handsome Bridegroom) and married Her. To this day, the temple is dedicated to the Goddess: She occupies the central garbhagriha facing North, while the Lord stands by Her side. Uniquely, Kamalavalli Nachiyar never leaves the temple, and on the auspicious day of Panguni Uthiram, Lord Ranganatha journeys in a grand palanquin from Srirangam across the Cauvery to Woraiyur for the divine Serthi Seva (divine union).
Woraiyur is also the revered birthplace (Avathara Sthalam) of the great saint Thiruppan Alvar, the celestial singer of the Amalanadipiran, who was carried into the sanctum sanctorum of Srirangam by Sage Lokasaranga on the Lord's command.
