About Sri Devaadiraja Perumal Temple , Thiruvazhundoor (Therazhundur)

Sri Devaadi Raja Perumal Temple (popularly known as Amaruviappan Temple) at Thiruvazhunthoor (Therazhundur near Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu) is the 23rd Divya Desam. It was celebrated in 45 pasurams by Thirumangai Alvar. This sthalam is historically revered as the holy birthplace of the celebrated Tamil poet Kavichakravarthi Kambar, author of the immortal Kamba Ramayanam.

The name Therazhundur (meaning "sunken chariot") stems from a celebrated Puranic trial. The righteous King Uparichara Vasu possessed a divine flying chariot given by Indra that never touched the ground. Called to adjudicate a dispute between sages and devas regarding Vedic animal sacrifice, Vasu favored the devas, causing the sages to curse him. His airborne chariot instantly descended and sank deep into the earth at this spot. The king fell prostrate before Lord Devaadi Rajan, who mercifully forgave him and granted darshan.

Furthermore, when Brahma hid the cattle and cowherd boys of Gokula to test Sri Krishna, the Lord expanded Himself as all the cows and calves. Delighted by the Lord's tender love for cows, He is enshrined here as Amaruviappan (one who is eternally flanked by loving cows), with a calf nuzzling at His lotus feet.
