Sri Devanatha Perumal Temple in Thiruvaheendrapuram (near Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu) is the 41st Divya Desam and the celebrated jewel of Nadunadu. Praised by Thirumangai Alvar in 10 pasurams, it is named after Aheendran (Adisesha), who dug a holy spring with his tail (Sesha Theertham) to quench the Lord's thirst, while Garuda brought the sacred river Garuda Nadhi.
The presiding Moolavar, Sri Devanathan, holds the unique status of Moovaragiya Oruvan: His deity exhibits the cosmic aspects of the Trimurtis (holding the discus and conch of Vishnu, the lotus of Brahma on His navel, and the third eye of Shiva subtly concealed on His forehead). Adjoining the temple rises the sanctified medicinal hillock Oushadhadri, dropped here by Hanuman while carrying the Sanjeevi mountain to Lanka.
Thiruvaheendrapuram is immortalized as the spiritual home of the polymath Acharya Swami Vedanta Desikan, who lived here for over 40 years. Atop Oushadhadri hill, Desika meditated upon the Garuda Mantra, whereupon Garuda initiated him into the Hayagriva Mantra. Lord Hayagriva manifested directly before Desika, conferring upon him supreme, incomparable wisdom.
