About Sri Kavalampadi Kannan Temple , ThirukKavalampaadi (Thirunangur)
Sri Gopala Krishna Perumal Temple in Thiru Kavalampaadi, located in the sacred Thirunangur cluster near Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu, is the 24th Divya Desam. Sung by Thirumangai Alvar in 10 pasurams, it is the first among the famed 11 Thirunangur Divya Desams created by Lord Vishnu in answer to Lord Shiva's ecstatic Rudra Tandava.
According to legend, when Lord Shiva engaged in the destructive Rudra Tandavam following the tragedy of Sati's self-immolation at Daksha's sacrifice, eleven drops of perspiration fell, producing eleven fierce forms of Rudra. To pacify Shiva's cosmic wrath, Lord Vishnu manifested in eleven divine forms around Thirunangur. At Kavalampaadi, the Lord revealed His sweet, enchanting pastoral form as Gopala Krishna, bearing the divine flute and accompanied by Queen Rukmini and Satyabhama.
This sthalam is also where the royal sage Vishwamitra performed severe penance and was granted the supreme illumination of the Gayatri Mantra. A unique tradition here connects to the Parijata tree brought by Krishna from heaven to please Satyabhama: praying here removes marital discord and blesses devotees with blissful conjugal harmony.
