The name Kaaichina Vendhan in classical Tamil denotes "the Sovereign Lord whose fierce righteous fury incinerates evil". In this sanctum, the Moolavar reclines in a majestic Bhujanga Sayanam on Adisesha. A remarkable architectural feature is that while His head and torso are seen through the main sanctum entrance, devotees are guided to an aperture window on the northern wall through which the sacred lotus feet (Thiruvadi) of the Lord are worshipped directly.
The sthala puranam tells of a sage named Yagnasharma who was cursed into an ogre for insulting rishis.
