About Sri Kaalamegha Perumal Temple , Thiru Moghur (Madurai)
Sri Kaalamegha Perumal Temple in Thiru Moghur, located 10 km northeast of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is the 65th Divya Desam. It was glorified in 12 pasurams by Nammazhwar and Thirumangai Alvar. The name Moghur is derived from Mohini, honoring the divine feminine incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
When the Devas and Asuras churned the ocean of milk (Ksheera Sagara), the divine nectar (Amrutha) emerged, and the demons seized it by force. Answering the devas' desperate prayer, Lord Vishnu manifested as the bewitching maiden Mohini here in the Kadamba forest, enchanted the asuras with Her celestial dance, and distributed the nectar exclusively to the devas, securing cosmic balance.
Thiru Moghur is internationally famous for its magnificent Chakrathazhwar (Sudarshana) Sannidhi: the stone idol of Sudarshana stands wielding 16 celestial weapons, inscribed with 154 sacred beejakshara mantras along His circular frame, surrounded by 48 divine attendants, with Yoga Narasimha seated on the reverse side. Devotees visit from across the globe to perform Sudarshana Homam and 108 circumambulations to cure fatal illnesses, dispel witchcraft, and achieve supreme victory in life.
