About Sri Kalyana Jagannatha Perumal Temple , Thiruppullanni (Ramanathapuram)

Sri Kalyana Jagannatha Perumal Temple in Thiruppullanni, near Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, is the 69th Divya Desam. Sung by Thirumangai Alvar in 21 pasurams, this sacred coastal temple is intimately tied to the epic Ramayana.

The name Thiruppullanni is derived from Pul (grass/darbha) and Anai (bed/cushion), marking the immortal site where Lord Sri Rama lay for three days and nights upon a bed of sacred Darbha grass, fasting and praying to the Sea God Varuna to grant passage to Lanka. It was also here that Ravana's righteous brother Vibhishana arrived from Lanka and fell prostrate, performing the supreme act of unconditional surrender (Saranagati), whereupon Rama granted him divine refuge (Abhayam).

Furthermore, it was at this sthalam that King Dasharatha worshipped Adi Jagannatha Perumal, received the divine Payasam from the Putrakameshti Yajna, and was blessed with four divine sons including Rama. To this day, childless couples perform the famous Naga Prathishta ritual in the temple pushkarini and install stone serpent idols under the sacred banyan tree, being blessed with children through Rama's grace.
