Sri Kola Valvilli Ramar Perumal Temple in Thiruvelliyankudi, near Cholapuram and Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, is the 19th Divya Desam. It was praised by Thirumangai Alvar in 10 pasurams. In astrological and Vaishnava tradition, this is the prime Sukra (Venus) Parihara Sthalam among all Divya Desams (Velli being the Tamil name for planet Venus/Sukra).
When Lord Vishnu manifested as Vamana to request three strides of land from Asura King Mahabali, the Asura preceptor Sukracharya realized the divine identity of the dwarf boy. Attempting to prevent the gift, Sukra transformed into a bee and blocked the spout of Mahabali's water vessel. Vamana pierced the spout with a blade of sacred darbha grass, blinding Sukra in one eye. Realizing his transgression, Sukracharya performed severe tapas at this kshetram. The Lord appeared before him in Kidantha Kolam, accepted his repentance, and restored his eyesight and wisdom.
Uniquely in the entire Vaishnava world, Lord Vishnu handed over His divine weapons—the Shanka (Conch) and Chakra (Discus)—to His vahana Garuda. Standing in the sanctum, Garudazhwar holds the divine Conch and Discus in his hands, making this temple a powerful center for removing planetary afflictions and visual ailments.
