About Sri Thiruvaazhmaarban Temple , (Thiruppathisaram, Nagercoil)
Sri Kuralappa Perumal Temple in Thiruvanparisaaram (Tirupathisaram near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu) is the 82nd Divya Desam. Sung by Nammazhwar in his Thiruvaimozhi, it is an exceptionally serene, picturesque Kerala-Dravidian architectural shrine nestled against the Western Ghats.
This holy sthalam is historically revered as the maternal birthplace of Nammazhwar: his saintly mother, Udayanangai, was born in this village. For years, Udayanangai and her husband Kaari worshipped Lord Kuralappa Perumal, praying for a child. Pleased with their devotion, the Lord declared that He would incarnate through them as the great saint Nammazhwar. Hence, this sanctum is revered as the divine source of the Alvar's advent.
The presiding Moolavar is a magnificent 9-foot seated deity fashioned from sacred Katusarkara herbal paste, enshrined as Thiruvaazhmarban (the Lord whose chest is the eternal dwelling place of Sri Mahalakshmi). Sage Agastya meditated here to comprehend the inner philosophical mysteries of the Upanishads. Devotees seeking spiritual peace, noble children, and removal of family lineage curses offer prayers at this tranquil sanctuary.
