Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal Temple comprising the twin shrines of Thiruvaali and Thirunagari, located 5 km apart near Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu, forms the 38th Divya Desam. Glorified in 42 pasurams by Kulasekhara Alvar and Thirumangai Alvar, this is the immortal spiritual homeland of Thirumangai Alvar (Neelan), who served as the chieftain of this territory (Alinadu).
At Thiruvaali, Lord Vishnu is enshrined as Lakshmi Narasimhar, uniquely seated with Goddess Mahalakshmi lovingly embraced on His lap, radiating supreme tranquility after the destruction of Hiranyakashipu. At Thirunagari, the Lord manifests as Vedarajan (Lord of the Vedas) in royal seated posture. Thirunagari is also the sacred birthplace (Avathara Sthalam) of Thirumangai Alvar.
This kshetram is legendary for the dramatic episode of Vedu Pari: Neelan, resorting to highway robbery to finance his daily feeding of 1,008 Vaishnavas, attempted to rob a newly wedded couple passing through the forest. When he tried to bite off the toe-ring of the bridegroom, the divine touch shook him to the core. The bridegroom, who was Lord Narayana in disguise, whispered the sacred Ashtakshara Mantra (Om Namo Narayanaya) into Neelan's ear, instantly transforming the fierce bandit-chieftain into the saint-poet Thirumangai Alvar, who broke out in spontaneous ecstatic poetry: "Vaadinen Vaadi Varundhinen...".
