Sri Maayapiran Perumal Temple in Thirupuliyoor, near Chengannur in Alappuzha district, Kerala, is the 85th Divya Desam. Celebrated in 12 pasurams by Nammazhwar and Thirumangai Alvar, it is one of the five venerated Pandava Temples (Pancha Pandava Sthalams) along the sacred Pamba river basin.
According to the Mahabharata tradition, after installing Parikshit upon the throne of Hastinapura, the five Pandava brothers and Draupadi undertook a pilgrimage to the south of India to expiate the karmic sins of the Kurukshetra war. The second brother, the mighty Bheemasena, renovated and worshipped at Thirupuliyoor, consecrating his own colossal battle-mace (Gada) at the feet of Lord Maayapiran. Hence, the Moolavar stands in a commanding Nindra Kolam wielding a prominent Gada club in His divine right hand.
The sthala is also where the Saptarishis (the Seven Celestial Sages: Marichi, Atri, Angiras, Pulaha, Kratu, Pulastya, and Vashishta) performed penance and attained supreme enlightenment. Devotees visit Thirupuliyoor to pray for physical strength, courage, recovery from chronic physical debility, and victory in righteous endeavors.
