Sri Magara Nedungkuzhai Kaathar Perumal Temple in Thenthirupperai, Thoothukudi district on the Thamirabarani river, Tamil Nadu, is the 77th Divya Desam. Praised in 11 pasurams by Nammazhwar in his Thiruvaimozhi, it is the 7th temple of the Nava Tirupathi, astrolatrously associated with Sukra (Venus).
The name Magara Nedungkuzhai Kaathar translates to "the Lord whose divine ears are adorned with long, magnificent shark-shaped earrings" (Makara Kundalas). According to legend, Varuna (the god of rain and oceans) lost his sacred umbrella and powers due to the curse of Sage Durvasa. Performing penance here on the riverbanks, Varuna recovered his celestial status and presented two priceless golden Makara earrings to the Lord in gratitude.
Furthermore, when severe drought devastated the land, Goddess Bhoomidevi performed tapas here; the Lord appeared, caused torrential rain to restore fertility, and received two more Makara kundalas from the earth goddess. In this temple, Nammazhwar sang in the emotional persona of a mother lamenting that her daughter had lost her heart to the enchanting beauty of the Lord's shark earrings! Devotees visit for Sukra dosha parihara, matrimonial harmony, and artistic excellence.
