Sri Nindra Nambi Perumal Temple in Thirukkurungudi, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, is the 81st Divya Desam. Glorified in 40 pasurams by Periyalvar, Thirumalisai Alvar, Nammazhwar, and Thirumangai Alvar, it is one of the grandest Vaishnava shrines in southern India. It was here that Thirumangai Alvar attained his final beatitude (Moksha).
This temple is legendary for an extraordinary cosmic reversal of roles between God and Guru: when Sri Ramanujacharya visited the temple, Lord Narayana was so enchanted by the Acharya's philosophical brilliance that the Lord Himself assumed the form of a student, sat humbly on the floor at Ramanuja's feet, and received the Vaishnava initiation (Dvaaya Mantra Upadesha) from Ramanuja! Delighted by His Acharya's wisdom, the Lord proclaimed Ramanuja as His supreme guru, and took the title Sri Vaishnava Nambi.
Thirukkurungudi enshrines the Lord in five magnificent forms (Pancha Nambi): Nindra Nambi (standing), Iruntha Nambi (seated), Kidantha Nambi (reclining), Thirupparkadal Nambi, and Malaimel Nambi atop the sacred Mahendragiri hill (from where Hanuman leapt to Lanka). The temple is celebrated for the ancient Kaisika Nataka dance-drama enacted on Kaisika Ekadashi, depicting the redemption of the singer Nambaduvan.
