About Sri Sempon Arangar Perumal Temple (Thirunangur)
Sri Sempon Sei Kovil (officially known as Sri Per Arulaalan Perumal Temple) in Thirunangur, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu, is the 27th Divya Desam. It was immortalized by Thirumangai Alvar in 10 pasurams in the Periya Thirumozhi.
The name Sempon Sei Kovil literally translates to "the temple crafted from pure gold". The sthala puranam records that after slaying the demon king Ravana in Lanka, Lord Sri Rama sought expiation for the sin of killing a brahmin-born king (Brahmahati Dosha). Advised by Sage Agastya, Rama made an offering of a massive life-sized cow fashioned from solid gold (Suvarna Dhenu) to a pious sage named Mukunda. Sage Mukunda refused to keep the immense wealth for personal luxury, instead donating the gold coins to Lord Vishnu. Lord Rama then used the molten golden coins to build this exquisite temple, naming the presiding deity Sempon Arangar (Lord of Pure Gold) or Per Arulaalan (Lord of Great Benevolence).
Devotees facing severe financial distress, bankruptcy, or heavy debts perform prayers here on Ekadashi days, believing that the Lord who created the temple from gold alleviates all poverty and grants sustainable prosperity.
