Sri Purushothama Perumal Temple in Thiruvanpurushothamam (Thirunangur, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu) is the 36th Divya Desam. It was celebrated by Thirumangai Alvar in 10 pasurams in the Periya Thirumozhi. The prefix Vann denotes generous, lavish magnanimity, honoring the Lord who bestows inexhaustible spiritual and material abundance.
The sacred sthala puranam tells the heartwarming tale of the child Upamanyu (son of Sage Vyaghrapada). Craving milk, the hungry infant wept inconsolably. His mother, unable to provide cows' milk in the hermitage, instructed the child to pray to Lord Vishnu, the father of all creation. The innocent boy sat in deep meditation upon the banks of the pushkarini here. Touched by the child's pure faith, Lord Vishnu descended in His supreme form as Purushothaman and churned the pushkarini, converting the entire body of water into an infinite Ocean of Milk (Thirupparkadal), feeding the child with celestial ambrosia.
