About Sri Purushothaman Perumal Temple , Thirukkarambanoor

Sri Purushothaman Perumal Temple, also celebrated as Uttamar Kovil or Bhikshatana Kshetram at Thirukkarambanoor near Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, is the 3rd Divya Desam, sung by Thirumangai Alvar. The temple derives its name Karambanoor from the sacred Karambu (banana and grass groves) where Sage Kadamba performed severe austerities.

This is one of the rarest temples in India where all three manifestations of the Supreme Trinityโ€”Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Shivaโ€”along with their respective consorts, Sri Mahalakshmi (Poornavalli), Saraswati, and Soundarya Parvati, are enshrined within a single temple compound. According to legend, when Lord Shiva severed the fifth head of Brahma, the skull remained attached to Shiva's hand as a consequence of Brahmahati Dosha. Lord Vishnu incarnated here as Purushothama, while Lakshmi served alms to Shiva, ultimately releasing Him from the curse.

The temple is celebrated across South India as an immensely powerful Guru Parihara Sthalam, housing seven forms of Guru (Preceptor): Lord Vishnu as Periya Guru, Lord Shiva as Dakshinamurthy, Brahma as Gnana Guru, Brihaspati as Deva Guru, Shukracharya as Asura Guru, Subrahmanya as Skanda Guru, and Soundarya Nayaki as Sakthi Guru.
