About Arulmigu Sri Mayakoothar Temple , Thirukkulanthai (Perungulam)
Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple (popularly hailed as Mayakoothan Temple) at Thirukkulanthai (Perungulam, Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu) is the 75th Divya Desam. Praised by Nammazhwar in his Thiruvaimozhi, it is the 4th temple of the Nava Tirupathi, planetary dedicated to Guru Bhagavan (Jupiter / Brihaspati).
The name Mayakoothan (the Magical Dancer) commemorates the Lord's destruction of an arrogant demon named Asuran. When the demon abducted young maidens and challenged the heavens, Lord Vishnu assumed an immense cosmic form, entered the demon's palace, stomped upon the asura's chest with His right foot, and danced a cosmic dance of victory (Koothu), crushing the demon's ego and delivering the captured souls. In the sanctum, the Moolavar stands with His right foot placed firmly upon the subdued asura.
This is also the sacred site where the pious maiden Kamalavathi performed penance to wed the Lord; Vishnu embraced Her and placed Her upon His sacred chest. Devotees suffering from Guru Dosha, lack of higher education, delays in childbirth, and financial stagnation pray to Mayakoothan to obtain wisdom and prosperous blessings.
