About Sri Annan Perumal Temple , Thiruvellakkulam (Annan Kovil, Thirunangur)
Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, canonically celebrated as Thiruvellakkulam and colloquially hailed as Annan Kovil (near Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu), is the 30th Divya Desam. Glorified in 10 pasurams by Thirumangai Alvar, it is deeply celebrated as the Annan (elder brother) to Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala Tirupati. The Lord is accompanied by Goddess Alarmelmangai Thayar, bearing the exact divine names and forms as in Tirumala.
According to legend, King Swethan was destined to die at a tender young age due to an astrological curse. Guided by Sage Vashishta, he performed intense penance on the banks of this sacred white lotus pool (Vellakkulam). Pleased with his devotion, Lord Srinivasa appeared and conquered death for Swethan, blessing the sacred pool as Swetha Pushkarini, where a holy dip cures premature death, deadly diseases, and Rahu-Ketu doshas.
This temple is intimately woven into the life of Thirumangai Alvar: it was in this very sanctum that the Alvar married his saintly consort Kumudavalli Nachiyar, who extracted the famous promise from him to feed 1,008 Vaishnavas daily and seek the lotus feet of Lord Narayana, leading to his transformation into one of the greatest mystic poets of India.
