Sri Vadivazhagiya Nambi Perumal Temple at Thiru Anbil, near Lalgudi in Tiruchirappalli district, Tamil Nadu, is the 5th Divya Desam, immortalized by Thirumalisai Alvar in his Nanmugan Tiruvandhadhi. The name Anbil denotes "place of love and divine affection", where Lord Vishnu bestows His boundless benevolence upon surrendered souls.
According to the sthala puranam, Sage Mandooka was engaged in intense underwater penance in the river waters here. When the short-tempered Sage Durvasa passed by and received no salutation, he cursed Mandooka to turn into a frog. Deeply repentant, Mandooka took shelter at this holy spot and prayed continuously to Lord Vishnu. The Lord appeared before him in breathtaking splendor, bearing exquisite beauty (Vadivazhagu), and delivered him from the amphibian curse into a resplendent celestial form. Hence, the Lord is hailed as Vadivazhagiya Nambi (Sundararajan), and the temple tank is revered as Mandooka Pushkarini.
The temple boasts an ancient historical heritage: the famous 8th-century Anbil copper plates of Chola King Sundara Chola record extensive royal endowments to this temple, reflecting its deep cultural and spiritual importance in Chola Nadu.
