It was glorified in 10 pasurams by Thirumangai Alvar, who describes it as the physical replication of the supreme spiritual world (Vaikuntha or Paramapadam) brought down to earth.
According to legend, King Swetha, a pious monarch who spent his lifetime in charity and meditation on Lord Vishnu, desired to behold the Lord exactly as He appears in the eternal heavenly abode of Vaikuntha without having to shed his physical body. The Lord responded to his fervent devotion by descending directly to this sacred grove accompanied by Adisesha and manifesting as Vaikunda Nathan, seated upon the coils of the five-headed serpent with Sri Vaikundavalli Thayar.
