About Sri Vaithamanidhi Perumal Temple , Thirukkoloor (Thirukkolur)
Sri Vaitha Maanitha Perumal Temple in Thirukkoloor, Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu, is the 78th Divya Desam. Celebrated in 12 pasurams by Nammazhwar, it is the 8th temple of the Nava Tirupathi, representing Budhan (Mercury). It is eternally sanctified as the revered Avathara Sthalam of Madhurakavi Alvar, who sang the supreme glory of his guru Nammazhwar in the immortal Kanninun Siruthambu.
The name Vaitha Maanidhi signifies "the Lord who safely deposited and preserves the Great Wealth". When Kubera, the god of riches, lost the nine cosmic treasures (Nava Nidhis) due to a curse from Goddess Parvati, the wealth of the universe dissipated. Kubera rushed to Thirukkoloor and performed severe penance. Lord Vishnu gathered all the lost treasures, placed them safely beneath His serpent bed as His pillow, and reclined upon them, subsequently returning them to Kubera. To this day, the Moolavar reclines with His left arm pointing down towards the treasure vessels stored beneath Him.
The temple is also famous in Sri Vaishnava history for the Thirukkoloor Pennpillai Rahasyam (the 81 profound spiritual statements of a young village girl leaving the town). Devotees suffering from bankruptcy, financial ruin, poverty, and Mercury doshas pray here to recover lost prosperity.
