Sri Valvil Ramar Perumal Temple in Thiruppullam Boothankudi, located near Kumbakonam and Swamimalai in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, is the 11th Divya Desam. It was glorified by Thirumangai Alvar in a dedicated decad of 10 pasurams in the Periya Thirumozhi.
This kshetram is celebrated for one of the most poignant episodes of the Ramayana. When the noble bird king Jatayu fought valiantly against Ravana to rescue Mother Sita, his wings were severed. Clinging to life with his final breaths, Jatayu waited until Lord Rama and Lakshmana arrived searching through the forest. After delivering the vital news that Ravana had abducted Sita towards the south, Jatayu collapsed and attained martyrdom. Moved to tears by Jatayu's supreme sacrifice, Lord Rama performed the funeral obsequies (anthyakriya) with full Vedic rites, honoring Jatayu as He would His own father, King Dasharatha.
Because performing Vedic funeral rites requires the presence of one's wedded wife and Sita was in captivity, Goddess Mahalakshmi emerged directly from the sacred golden lotus pushkarini as Potramaraial Thayar to stand beside Rama during the ceremonies. Exhausted from grief and the rites, Rama rested upon Adisesha holding His bow (Kothandam), Shanka, and Chakra. Hence, this is the only Divya Desam where Lord Rama is enshrined in Bhujanga Sayana (reclining posture).
