About Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple ,Tirumanikoodam (Thirunangur)
Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple in Thiru Manikkoodam (Thirunangur, Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu) is the 29th Divya Desam. It was praised in 10 pasurams by Thirumangai Alvar, who describes the temple as a sparkling gem (Mani) set within the lush verdant groves of the Cauvery delta.
The sthala puranam recounts that a fierce demon named Kolasura wreaked havoc among the sages and devas of this region. When the devas prayed for rescue, Lord Vishnu manifested with supreme luster from a dazzling hall of gems (Manikkoodam) and vanquished the demon with His Sudarshana Discus. At the dying request of Kolasura, who repented at the Lord's feet, the Lord assumed the benevolent form of Varadaraja Perumal (the King of Boon-givers), promising to bless anyone who visits this sanctum with freedom from fear, planetary malefic effects, and prosperity.
Furthermore, Garuda performed penance here to receive the Lord's blessings before flying to fetch the nectar pot (Amrutha Kalasa) from heaven. Devotees visit Manikkoodam to pray for the relief of ancestral karmas, victory over obstacles, and attainment of higher wisdom.
