📖 How to Read the Hanuman Chalisa
The Hanuman Chalisa is composed in Awadhi/Hindi by Goswami Tulsidas (गोस्वामी तुलसीदास) using two poetic forms: Doha (दोहा) and Chaupai (चौपाई). Each verse has a fixed rhythm. Use the script selector above to read in Sanskrit (Devanagari), English (Roman transliteration), or Telugu. Listen to the audio for correct pronunciation, then practice chanting along.
🕉️ दोहा (Doha)
A doha is a couplet of two lines (sometimes written as four half-lines). The Chalisa opens and closes with a doha. It sets the mood and invokes the Guru and Lord Rama before praising Hanuman, and at the end it asks Hanuman to reside in the devotee’s heart.
📖 चौपाई (Chaupai)
A chaupai is a quatrain of four lines. The main body of the Hanuman Chalisa is made of 40 chaupais (hence “Chalisa”—forty). Each chaupai describes Hanuman’s qualities, deeds, or blessings. Read or chant them one by one; you can toggle between Sanskrit and English in every lesson below.
