Karwa Chauth is one of the most celebrated festivals observed by married Hindu women, particularly in North India. It falls on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu lunar month of Kartik (Ashwin in the Amanta calendar followed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and South India). Though the lunar month name differs between Purnimanta and Amanta calendars, the fast is observed on the exact same day nationwide.
Significance of Karak Chaturthi:
The day is also known as Karak Chaturthi. The term Karwa or Karak refers to the sacred earthen pot through which Arghya (water offering) is made to the Moon God. During the puja, the Karwa pot holds immense ritual importance and is subsequently gifted as Dana to a Brahmin or married woman.
Sankashti Chaturthi & Lord Vakratunda:
Karwa Chauth coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi. Married women worship Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya. In Maharashtra and Western India, devotees observe the fast of Vakratunda Sankashti Chaturthi on this day, worshipping the Vakratunda form of Lord Ganesha—the first among the Ashta Vinayakas.
Strict Fasting Rules:
The fast is a strict Nirjala Vrat—observed without taking any food or even a drop of water from sunrise until the moon is sighted at night. Women break their fast only after viewing the moon through a sieve, making Arghya offerings, and receiving the first sip of water from their husbands.

How to celebrate Karwa Chauth 2026
1. Sargi (Pre-Dawn Meal): Eat the traditional Sargi (fruits, sweets, mathri) gifted by the mother-in-law before sunrise.
2. Nirjala Fast Vow: Begin the strict waterless fast from sunrise.
3. Evening Puja & Katha: In the late afternoon, gather with women, dress in traditional red/pink sarees, decorate the Karwa pot, and listen to the Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha.
4. Moonrise Arghya: Upon moonrise, look at the Moon through a sieve (Chhanani), offer water Arghya, and look at your husband.
5. Breaking the Fast: The husband offers the wife her first sip of water and a piece of sweet, formally breaking the fast.

However, it is just the name of the month which differs and in all states Karwa Chauth is observed on the same day.
