What is Business Opening muhurat?
Auspicious days to start a business, open a shop or begin a new venture.
A business or shop-opening muhurat is chosen to begin a venture under favourable stars, inviting growth and success. The date weighs the nakshatra, tithi and weekday, and many prefer to begin on Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras or other prosperous days.
Auspicious nakshatras (Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Revati) and shubh tithis are preferred, while Bhadra, Amavasya, Rikta tithis and inauspicious yogas are avoided.
The dates below are computed from the panchang for India (IST). Confirm the opening-puja time window with a priest.
How to choose a Business Opening muhurat
- 1 Pick a favourable nakshatra and shubh tithi for business opening from the list below.
- 2 Avoid Bhadra (Vishti karana), Amavasya, Rikta tithis and inauspicious yogas (Vyatipata, Vaidhriti).
- 3 Within the chosen day, use an auspicious muhurta window such as Abhijit Muhurta or Amrit Kaal.
- 4 Confirm the exact time against your family's birth details with a priest.
How this is calculated
Auspicious dates are selected from the panchang by weighing the nakshatra, tithi, weekday and yoga, and excluding inauspicious periods — Bhadra (Vishti karana), Amavasya, Rikta tithis and yogas such as Vyatipata and Vaidhriti — following classical muhurta guidance (Dharmasindhu / Nirnaya Sindhu). A personal muhurta also weighs your family's birth details; confirm with a priest.
FAQ
Which day is good to open a new business?
A day with an auspicious nakshatra (such as Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, Chitra or Ashwini), a shubh tithi and a good weekday. Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) are especially popular for new ventures.
Which weekday is best to start a business or open a shop?
Wednesday and Thursday are considered most favourable for commerce and learning; Monday and Friday are also good, while Tuesday and Saturday are usually avoided.
Is Diwali or Akshaya Tritiya good for starting a business?
Yes — Diwali (Lakshmi Puja), Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya and Gudi Padwa are considered self-auspicious days and are traditional favourites for opening a business or new account books (bahi-khata).
What puja is done at a business or shop opening?
A Ganesh puja for an obstacle-free start and a Lakshmi (and Kubera) puja for prosperity are performed, often with a havan, before the shutter is opened or the first sale is made on the chosen muhurat.
Can I start a business during Chaturmas?
A business can be started during Chaturmas on an otherwise auspicious day, though many prefer to wait for a self-auspicious festival day; Amavasya, Bhadra and Rikta tithis are still avoided.
What should be avoided when opening a business?
Avoid Bhadra (Vishti karana), Amavasya, Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and inauspicious yogas such as Vyatipata and Vaidhriti.
