What is Griha Pravesh muhurat?
Auspicious dates for housewarming (Griha Pravesh) — moving into a new or renovated home.
Griha Pravesh is the housewarming ceremony performed before entering a new, rebuilt or renovated home for the first time. A good muhurat is chosen so the family enters under favourable stars, inviting prosperity, health and peace into the household.
The date is selected mainly from the nakshatra (fixed and gentle stars such as Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara, Anuradha, Chitra and Revati are preferred), a shubh tithi, and a favourable weekday, while avoiding Bhadra (Vishti karana), Amavasya and inauspicious yogas. Traditionally Uttarayana (mid-January to mid-July) and the months around it are favoured, and the Chaturmas period is generally avoided for a first Griha Pravesh.
The dates below are computed from the panchang for India (IST, Hyderabad reference). The exact muhurta window within a chosen day, and adjustments for your family's nakshatras, are best confirmed with a priest.
How to choose a Griha Pravesh muhurat
- 1 Pick a favourable nakshatra and shubh tithi for griha pravesh from the list below.
- 2 Avoid Bhadra (Vishti karana), Amavasya, Rikta tithis and inauspicious yogas (Vyatipata, Vaidhriti).
- 3 Within the chosen day, use an auspicious muhurta window such as Abhijit Muhurta or Amrit Kaal.
- 4 Confirm the exact time against your family's birth details with a priest.
How this is calculated
Auspicious dates are selected from the panchang by weighing the nakshatra, tithi, weekday and yoga, and excluding inauspicious periods — Bhadra (Vishti karana), Amavasya, Rikta tithis and yogas such as Vyatipata and Vaidhriti — following classical muhurta guidance (Dharmasindhu / Nirnaya Sindhu). A personal muhurta also weighs your family's birth details; confirm with a priest.
FAQ
Which nakshatras are best for Griha Pravesh?
Fixed and gentle nakshatras are preferred — Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Anuradha, Chitra, Swati and Revati are commonly chosen for housewarming.
Which months are avoided for Griha Pravesh?
A first Griha Pravesh is traditionally avoided during Chaturmas (roughly Ashadha to Kartik) and in the inauspicious months of Bhadrapada, Ashwin, Pausha and the malmas (adhika month). Uttarayana months (Magha to Ashadha) are generally preferred, and Amavasya, Bhadra and eclipse days are always avoided.
How is the Griha Pravesh muhurat chosen?
From a favourable nakshatra, a shubh tithi and weekday, avoiding Bhadra (Vishti karana), Amavasya and inauspicious yogas. The exact time window is then confirmed against your family's birth stars.
Which weekday is best for Griha Pravesh?
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are considered favourable for housewarming; Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday are generally avoided for a first entry.
Can Griha Pravesh be done in a rented house?
A full Griha Pravesh with all rituals is meant for a home you own. For a rented home, families usually do a simpler Vastu Shanti or Satyanarayan puja on an auspicious day rather than a formal Griha Pravesh.
What puja is done during Griha Pravesh?
A Ganesh puja, Vastu Shanti (or Vastu puja), a havan, and often a Satyanarayan katha are performed; milk is boiled over so it overflows as a sign of abundance, and the family enters right foot first.
Is a specific Griha Pravesh needed for a renovated home?
Yes — re-entering after major renovation or a long absence is a "Dwandwah" or "Sapoorva" Griha Pravesh and is done on a chosen muhurat with Vastu Shanti, though the rules are less strict than for a brand-new home.
