What is Mundan muhurat?
Auspicious days for the child's first tonsure (Mundan / Chudakarana).
Mundan (Chudakarana) is the ceremony of a child's first head-shaving, usually in the first or third year. An auspicious day is chosen for the child's health and long life, from favourable nakshatras, a shubh tithi and weekday.
Preferred nakshatras include Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Revati. The child's own birth (janma) nakshatra is avoided, along with Bhadra, Amavasya and inauspicious yogas.
The dates below are computed from the panchang for India (IST). Confirm the day against the child's birth star with a priest.
How to choose a Mundan muhurat
- 1 Pick a favourable nakshatra and shubh tithi for mundan from the list below.
- 2 Avoid Bhadra (Vishti karana), Amavasya, Rikta tithis and inauspicious yogas (Vyatipata, Vaidhriti).
- 3 Within the chosen day, use an auspicious muhurta window such as Abhijit Muhurta or Amrit Kaal.
- 4 Confirm the exact time against your family's birth details with a priest.
How this is calculated
Auspicious dates are selected from the panchang by weighing the nakshatra, tithi, weekday and yoga, and excluding inauspicious periods — Bhadra (Vishti karana), Amavasya, Rikta tithis and yogas such as Vyatipata and Vaidhriti — following classical muhurta guidance (Dharmasindhu / Nirnaya Sindhu). A personal muhurta also weighs your family's birth details; confirm with a priest.
FAQ
At what age is Mundan performed?
Mundan is usually done at an odd age — in the child's first, third or fifth year — and traditionally before the fifth year. An auspicious day is chosen from the panchang.
Which nakshatras are good for Mundan?
Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Jyeshtha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Revati — while avoiding the child's own birth (janma) nakshatra.
Which months are best for Mundan?
Uttarayana months such as Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha and the bright fortnights are preferred; Mundan is generally avoided during the mother's or child's birth month and in the malmas (adhika month).
Which god is worshipped at the Mundan ceremony?
A Ganesh puja is done first for an obstacle-free ceremony, and many families perform Mundan at a temple of their family deity (kuldevata) or at shrines like Tirupati, Tirumala or a Balaji temple.
Can Mundan be done at a temple?
Yes — many families vow to do the child's first tonsure at a temple such as Tirumala (Tirupati), Vaishno Devi or a local kuldevata shrine; it is still best done on an auspicious day.
What is done with the hair after Mundan?
The shaved hair is traditionally offered — immersed in a holy river or offered at the temple — as a symbol of removing negativity from past lives and praying for the child's long life.
