The name Velukkai is derived from Vel (desire or free will) and Irukkai (dwelling seat), signifying the holy place where Lord Narasimha chose to sit in tranquil meditation of His own divine pleasure.
When Lord Brahma was performing his Ashwamedha Yajna, fierce asuras attempted to destroy the sacrificial altar. In response to Brahma's distress, Lord Vishnu manifested in His ferocious man-lion form of Narasimha and routed the demons into oblivion. Having saved the sacrifice, instead of returning immediately to Vaikuntha, the Lord felt drawn to the serene beauty of this jasmine grove and chose to remain here, folding His legs into the majestic Yoga Asana with the Yogapatta strap. Hence, He is hailed as Azhagiya Singar (the Handsome Lion).
