About Sri Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple , Thirukkannamangai

Sri Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple in Thirukkannamangai, near Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, is the 17th Divya Desam, sung by Thirumangai Alvar in 14 verses. Celebrated as the Sapthamritha Kshetram (the Seven Nectars: Sthalam, Vimanam, Pushkarini, Nadhi, Perumal, Thayar, and Tree), it is also revered as Krishna Mangala Kshetram.

The sthala is renowned for the divine wedding of Goddess Mahalakshmi as Abhishekavalli Thayar. After emerging from the churning of the milk ocean, She performed penance here to wed Lord Vishnu. To witness the auspicious cosmic wedding without ever blinking or causing disturbance, all the 330 million devas, rishis, and celestials assumed the ethereal forms of honeybees and built a sacred hive inside the Thayar's sanctum window. To this day, a live beehive remains preserved beside Goddess Abhishekavalli's shrine through all seasons, and the bees never sting or disturb pilgrims.

The presiding Moolavar, Sri Bhaktavatsalan, is a magnificent 12-foot-tall granite monolith known in Tamil as Perum Pura Kadal (Ocean of Grace). In ancient times, Lord Shiva guarded the four borders of this sacred sthalam as Kshetrapalaka to protect the Lord's marriage festivities.
