About Sri Mukhalingeswra Swamy Temple
The Sri Mukhalingeswara Swamy Temple complex, historically known as Kalinganagari, served as the glorious capital of the Eastern Ganga dynasty from the 6th to the 12th century. The principal shrine, Madhukeshwara, was constructed in the late 8th century under the direct royal patronage of the Eastern Ganga King Kamarnava Deva II. Architecturally, the location represents a spectacular milestone in Kalinga architecture, displaying highly intricate stone carvings, grand entrance gateways, and a group of three distinct ลaiva temples: Madhukeshwara, Someswara, and Bhimeswara. The temple underwent major structural restoration during the 17th century by the Maharaja of the Paralakhemundi Estate. The primary spiritual focus is the extraordinary main lingam, which is a natural, faceted face-like formation that emerged from the trunk of a Madhuka tree (Madhuca longifolia), reflecting a beautiful blend of nature and divinity.
Festivals & Celebrations
Special monthly Pradosha Vratam rituals and massive Anna Prasadam distribution schemes are arranged regularly during auspicious seasonal weekdays.
