About Sri Pydithalli Ammavari Temple
The Sri Pydithalli Ammavari Temple holds an irreplaceable position in the historical, political, and spiritual fabric of Northern Andhra Pradesh. The temple is intimately connected to the tragic events of the Battle of Bobbili fought in January 1757 between the Gajapati King of Vizianagaram, Vijaya Rama Raju, and the Raja of Bobbili. According to historical records, the king's sister, Princess Pydimamba, was an intense spiritual practitioner who tried to dissuade her brother from pursuing the devastating war. Upon discovering through her spiritual visions that her brother was slain by Tandra Papa Rayudu, she dissolved into a deep meditative trance and passed away. Following her demise, she appeared in a divine dream to a loyal royal soldier named Patiwada Appala Naidu, instructing him to retrieve her self-manifested idol from the western banks of the Pedda Cheruvu lake and establish a place of worship. The current temple layout stands at that exact historic site, serving as a monument to her eternal protective vow over the citizens of Vizianagaram.
