Sri Nilathingal Thundathan Perumal Temple in Thiru Nilathingal Thundam is the 55th Divya Desam, sung by Thirumangai Alvar in his Thirunedunthandakam. Remarkably, like Thirukkalvanoor in Kamakshi temple and Thiruchitrakootam in Chidambaram, this Divya Desam is enshrined directly within the first inner circumambulatory corridor of the monumental Kanchipuram Sri Ekambareswarar Temple (Prithvi Shiva Sthalam).
The sthala puranam recounts that Goddess Parvati made a Shivalinga out of river sand beneath a mango tree and performed severe tapas surrounded by burning fires. To test Her devotion, Shiva intensified the heat and caused the river to flood. Parvati prayed to Her brother, Lord Vishnu. In response, Lord Vishnu manifested from the crescent moon adorning Shiva's locks, radiating soothing, cool lunar rays (Nilaathingal) that quenched the scorching heat and protected Parvati's sand lingam. Delighted, Parvati praised Vishnu as Nilathingal Thundathan (the Lord of the Cooling Moon Fragment).
