Sri Pavala Vannar Temple in Thiru Pavala Vannan (Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu) is the 54th Divya Desam, sung by Thirumangai Alvar in his Thirunedunthandakam. In Vaishnava lore, it is celebrated for the exceedingly rare coral-red complexion of the Lord.
According to legend, Sage Bhrigu was plagued by spiritual arrogance and sought to test which among the Trimurtis possessed supreme equanimity. After kicking Lord Vishnu on the chest and having his arrogance dissolved by the Lord's gentle massage, Bhrigu was deeply conscience-stricken. He traveled to Kanchipuram and performed penance to behold the Lord's purifying redemptive form. Lord Vishnu appeared before him radiant as molten red coral (Pavalam), washing away all the sage's sins with His compassionate glance. Hence, He is hailed as Pavala Vannan.
Across the street stands the complementary temple of Pacchai Vannan, where the Lord manifests in dazzling emerald-green (Maragatham). A devout pilgrimage to Kanchipuram is traditionally deemed complete only when devotees worship both the Coral-hued Lord and the Emerald-hued Lord, symbolizing the infinite chromatic beauty of Sriman Narayana.
