About Sri Saranathan Perumal Temple , Thiruccherai
Sri Saranathan Perumal Temple in Thiruccherai, near Kudavasal in Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, is the 16th Divya Desam. Praised by Thirumangai Alvar in 13 divine pasurams, it is revered as the Pancha Sara Kshetram because five sacred entities bear the prefix Sara (essence): Sthalam (Thiruccherai), Pushkarini (Sara Pushkarini), Vimanam (Sara Vimanam), Perumal (Saranathan), and Thayar (Saranayaki).
According to the sthala puranam, when the cosmic deluge (Pralaya) threatened to dissolve the world, Lord Brahma was commanded to preserve the sacred seeds of creation, herbs, and Vedas in a durable clay pot. Brahma searched the three worlds, but all soil dissolved in the floods until he took the sanctified rich clay from Thiruccherai (Cherai meaning clay), which alone stood indestructible against the deluge.
Furthermore, River Cauvery, lamenting that Ganga was deemed superior because she originated from Vishnu's feet, performed severe austerities on the banks of Sara Pushkarini. Pleased with her tapas, Lord Vishnu appeared as a playful infant in her lap, declared Cauvery equal in purity to Ganga, and manifested in His supreme form flanked by five Lakshmis: Sridevi, Bhoodevi, Neeladevi, Mahalakshmi, and Sara Nachiyar.
