Sri Vijayaraghava Perumal Temple in Thiruputkuzhi, located 15 km west of Kanchipuram in Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu, is the 56th Divya Desam. It was glorified in 2 pasurams by Thirumangai Alvar. The name Thiruputkuzhi is derived from Pul (bird, referring to Jatayu) and Kuzhi (pit), honoring the sacred burial pit where Lord Rama placed Jatayu for cremation.
Having fought Ravana to rescue Sita, the heroic bird Jatayu fell here with broken wings. When Lord Rama arrived, Jatayu delivered the vital news of Sita's abduction and breathed his last. Deeply moved, Rama held Jatayu upon His lap, performed the sacred fire cremation rites with His bow, and personally granted the bird eternal residence in Vaikuntha. In this temple, Lord Vijayaraghava is seated in a poignant Iruntha Kolam, lovingly cradling the martyred Jatayu upon His lap.
Goddess Maragadhavalli Thayar is world-renowned for a miraculous prayer ritual for childless women (Santhana Prapthi): women tie roasted green gram (payatham parippu) in their saree pallu overnight. By divine grace, the roasted gram, which is biologically incapable of sprouting, miraculously germinates green sprouts by morning, indicating the blessing of progeny!
