Trikkakkara Vamana Moorthy Temple in Trikkakkara (Kochi, Ernakulam district, Kerala) is the 91st Divya Desam. Celebrated in 11 pasurams by Nammazhwar in his Thiruvaimozhi, it is one of the exceptionally rare temples in India dedicated exclusively to Lord Vamana (the dwarf-brahmin fifth incarnation of Vishnu).
The name Thrikkakkara is derived from Thiru-Kaal-Kara (the land sanctified by the Lord's Holy Foot). Here, Lord Vamana requested three paces of land from the righteous Asura Emperor Mahabali. After measuring the earth with His first stride and the heavens with His second, Mahabali offered his own head for the third stride. The Lord placed His holy foot upon Mahabali's crown, pushing him to the netherworld of Sutala while granting him immortality and the eternal boon to visit his beloved subjects once every year—giving birth to Kerala's grand national festival of Onam.
The temple is the epicenter of the 10-day grand Onam celebrations, marked by traditional Pookkalam (floral carpets), the traditional Onasadya feast, and the display of Thrikkakkara Appan clay pyramids in every Malayali household worldwide.
