About the Hindu calendar

The Hindu calendar (Panchang) tracks the day by the Moon and Sun rather than only the English date. Each day carries five limbs — tithi, vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana — and from these the dates of festivals, vrats and auspicious muhurat are worked out.

Because festivals follow the lunar tithi, their English dates change each year and can differ by a day between regions. These pages compute the panchang for India (IST) using Hyderabad as the reference, and link every festival and vrat to its full details.

How this is calculated

Timings are computed with the Drik (observational) method using the Lahiri (Chitra-paksha) ayanamsha, for India (IST) with Hyderabad as the reference location. Sunrise- and sunset-based windows — Rahu Kalam, Choghadiya and the muhurtas — are derived from the day's actual sunrise and sunset, so they shift a few minutes by city.

FAQ

What is the Hindu calendar (Panchang)?

The Panchang is the traditional Hindu almanac. For every day it gives five limbs (panch-anga) — tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (star), yoga and karana — from which festivals, vrats and auspicious muhurat are determined.

How do I find festivals for a particular month in 2026?

Pick the month below to open its calendar grid. Each day shows the tithi and nakshatra, and festival, Amavasya, Purnima and vrat days are highlighted with links to their full details.

Why do Hindu festival dates change every year?

Most Hindu festivals are fixed by the lunar tithi and nakshatra rather than the English date, and the lunar and solar calendars drift against each other, so the same festival falls on a different English date each year.

What is the difference between Shukla and Krishna paksha?

A lunar month has two fortnights: Shukla Paksha, the waxing phase from the new moon to the full moon, and Krishna Paksha, the waning phase from the full moon to the next new moon.
