Sri Ahobila Narasimha Swamy Temple in Ahobilam (Kurnool/Nandyal district, nestled in the dense Nallamala forest ranges of Andhra Pradesh) is the 96th Divya Desam. Celebrated in 10 pasurams by Thirumangai Alvar, it is the paramount Nava Narasimha Kshetram on earth and the foundational spiritual seat of the 600-year-old Sri Ahobila Mutt.
According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, this sacred forest is the exact geographical and metaphysical spot where the demon king Hiranyakashipu struck the palace stone pillar asking: "Where is your Vishnu? Is He in this pillar?". With a roar that shook the cosmos, Lord Narasimha burst forth from the pillar (still standing atop the mountain peak as the Ugra Sthambham), tore the demon asunder upon the threshold at dusk, and lovingly embraced the boy Prahlada. Witnessing the awe-inspiring roar, the devas exclaimed: "Aho Balam! Aho Veeryam!" (Oh what divine strength!), giving the kshetram its name Ahobilam.
The pilgrimage is divided into Lower Ahobilam (Diguva Ahobilam, housing Prahlada Varada) and Upper Ahobilam (Eguva Ahobilam, housing the original cave shrine of Ugra Narasimha), featuring nine distinct Narasimha shrines scattered through the rugged forest hills.
