📍 Tirupati Town, Tirupati District, Andhra Pradesh

National Significance

In the heart of Tirupati town stands a temple that is not an afterthought — it is the beginning. Govindaraja Swamy, the reclining Vishnu of the plains, is considered the elder brother of Venkateswara of Tirumala. Every serious Tirupati pilgrimage begins or ends here, in the shadow of the great white gopuram that watches over the busiest street in town.

📖 About Govindaraja Swamy Temple

Most pilgrims come to Tirupati for Tirumala and completely overlook the Govindaraja Swamy Temple at the base of the hill — which is a shame because this is one of the finest Dravidian temple complexes in Andhra Pradesh. The towering white gopuram is visible from most of the city and the inner sanctum, dedicated to the reclining Vishnu, has a depth of atmosphere that the more famous temple on the hill actually makes harder to find. The temple tank and the surrounding prakaram are worth an hour of quiet exploration.
