About Mangalnath Temple
According to the Matsya Purana, Mars (Mangal) is the son of Prithvi (Earth); Hindu mythology holds that Mangal was born from a drop of Lord Shiva's perspiration during his battle with the demon Andhakasura (some tellings reference Tripurasura), giving rise to a Shivling at this spot from which the planet Mars emerged. The temple is thus dedicated to Shiva in his Mangalnath form. Ujjain's location — historically regarded as lying on the Tropic of Cancer and considered by tradition the geographical/navel center of the world ("Nabhigradesh") — reinforced the site's importance for astronomical and astrological study; the city was long a center for tracking stars and planets. The temple's distinctive ritual, Bhaat Puja, involves offering a mixture of mashed rice and curd to cool Mangal's fiery, aggressive nature. Unusually for a Shiva shrine, a goat rather than the customary Nandi bull is found at the temple entrance.
