Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple (Ashwini Star) ✓

Unlike most Shiva sanctums, which face east, the presiding deity here faces west, a rare orientation in Hindu temple tradition. This distinctive west-facing sanctum is one of the temple's most notable architectural features, while the Goddess Periyanayaki (Bruhan Nayaki) has a separate shrine facing east.

According to temple tradition recorded by heritage researchers, the temple was built by the Chola king Kulothunga Chozha. Few original inscriptions survive today, as most were lost or replaced during later renovations.

Ashwini-born devotees are advised to perform Dhanvantri Homa and Saneeswara (Shani) Homa and to worship the planet Mars (Angaraka/Kuja). Women offer prayers and clothes to the deity for the well-being and long life of their husbands.
