Primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva, its origins are deeply tied to two ancient ascetics, Padukkai Jadamudi Siddha and Prana Deepika Siddha, who established a Shivalinga beneath a gooseberry tree. Because the Sanskrit word for gooseberry is Thathiri, the deity was historically associated with this name. The surrounding area, once famously fragrant and inhabited by these Siddhas, eventually evolved into its modern name, Chithukadu.
The temple is renowned for its unique architectural and spiritual features, most notably a gentle Nandhi carved without the traditional nose rope, and intricate pillars depicting the two founding Siddhas.
