Temple Icon Sri Bhu Varahaswamy Temple

📍 Tirumala, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

National Significance

Before the pilgrimage to Venkateswara begins, there is an older agreement to honour — Varahaswamy, the Boar incarnation of Vishnu, was the original owner of the Tirumala hills, and Lord Venkateswara himself requested a plot of land from Varaha before settling here. Devotees visit Varahaswamy first, always.

Spiritual Highlights

Unique Powers:

All food (Nivedana) offered at Tirumala goes to Varahaswamy first — the Lord is the cosmic landlord whose precedence even Venkateswara acknowledges.

Miracle Beliefs:

Devotees who skip Varahaswamy and go directly to the main temple are believed to receive an incomplete blessing — the "landlord" must be honoured first.

Devotee Practices:

Visiting Varahaswamy before joining the Vaikuntam Queue Complex; bathing in the Swami Pushkarini tank before either darshan.

Spiritual Benefits:

Land prosperity, removal of ignorance, and the completeness of the Tirumala pilgrimage — the blessing is considered incomplete without this darshan.

📖 About Sri Bhu Varahaswamy Temple

On Tirumala hill, before approaching Venkateswara, tradition requires that devotees first seek the blessings of Varahaswamy — Lord Vishnu in his boar incarnation, who is considered the original owner of the Tirumala land and the deity who gave TTD permission, in a sense, to administer the temple above. This is not folklore that pilgrims treat casually: the Varahaswamy temple receives its own dedicated stream of devotees who come specifically for this prior blessing, and the prasadam — a particular type of tamarind rice — is different from anything offered elsewhere on the hill. The temple is ancient, compact, and carries a weight of tradition that the main temple complex, for all its scale, cannot quite replicate.
