Jakhu Hanuman Temple

Jakhu Hanuman Temple is one of the most ancient and revered Hanuman temples in North India. According to the Ramayana, Lord Hanuman rested on Jakhu Hill during his search for the Sanjeevani herb to revive the wounded Lakshmana. His divine footprints are believed to be preserved near the shrine, making this hill permanently sanctified by his presence. The swayambhu (self-manifested) Hanuman idol in the main sanctum is believed to be thousands of years old, radiating powerful spiritual energy that draws pilgrims from across the country.

The 108-foot (approximately 33 meters) tall statue of Lord Hanuman at Jakhu Hill is one of the tallest Hanuman statues in India and a landmark visible from across Shimla city and the surrounding Himalayan hills. The statue is painted in vibrant orange and red, the traditional colors associated with Hanuman, and depicts him in a standing posture. The number 108 is considered sacred in Hinduism, representing completeness and divine perfection. The statue was constructed and consecrated in modern times and has become both a spiritual landmark and a major visual icon of Shimla.

Jakhu Hanuman Temple is open from 05:00 AM to 12:00 PM in the morning and from 04:00 PM to 09:00 PM in the evening, every day of the week. Morning aarti is conducted at sunrise and is particularly popular with devotees and visitors alike. Timings may vary slightly during festivals, special occasions, and winter months when snowfall can affect access. It is advisable to visit early morning for peaceful darshan before tourist crowds arrive.

Jakhu Temple can be reached by two main routes: the Jakhu Ropeway, a 5-minute cable car ride starting from near the Ridge in Shimla, which offers scenic aerial views of the city; or by trekking approximately 1.5 km uphill through a forested trail filled with rhododendron and oak trees. Taxis can also be hired up to a certain point near the base of the hill. The Ridge, from where the ropeway departs, is easily accessible from all parts of Shimla by auto-rickshaw or on foot from Mall Road. Shimla Railway Station (Kalka–Shimla narrow gauge heritage line) is approximately 3 km away.

Jakhu Hill is home to a large population of rhesus macaques, considered sacred as they are associated with Lord Hanuman. While spiritually revered, the monkeys can be bold and are known to snatch food, bags, water bottles, spectacles, and mobile phones from visitors. It is strongly advised not to carry food items openly, keep bags zipped and held close, and avoid dangling accessories. Do not provoke or make direct eye contact with the monkeys. Children should be supervised closely. The monkeys are protected and should not be harmed — they are simply a vivid and beloved part of the Jakhu experience.

Jakhu Temple can be visited year-round, each season offering a distinct experience. Spring (March–June) is ideal with pleasant weather, blooming rhododendrons, and Hanuman Jayanti festivities. Summer (May–June) brings large numbers of hill-station tourists alongside pilgrims. Monsoon (July–September) makes the forest trail lush and green but can be slippery. Winter (December–February) offers a magical experience with the temple and 108-foot statue surrounded by snow — arguably the most scenic time to visit, though warm clothing and non-slip footwear are essential. The Hanuman Jayanti period (March–April) sees the largest pilgrimage gatherings.

There is no entry fee to visit Jakhu Hanuman Temple — darshan is completely free for all devotees. However, the Jakhu Ropeway charges a fare for the cable car ride (approximately ₹250–₹500 for a return ticket for adults; rates are subject to change). Trekking to the temple on foot through the forest trail is free and is in fact considered a form of spiritual austerity by many devotees. Prasad and offerings can be purchased from stalls near the temple entrance.

The most important festival at Jakhu Temple is Hanuman Jayanti (March–April), celebrated with grand abhishekam, mass Hanuman Chalisa recitation, Sundarkand path, and a large procession of devotees who trek up the hill as a form of devotional austerity. Ram Navami (March–April) is also celebrated with special pujas and extended darshan. Dussehra sees a notable procession from Jakhu Temple descending to the Ridge and Mall Road — a major cultural event in Shimla. Navratri (twice yearly) and Diwali are also observed with special rituals and illuminations.

Jakhu Hill itself offers a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of Shimla city, the surrounding Himalayan ranges, and on clear days even the snow-capped peaks beyond. Nearby attractions include The Ridge and Mall Road (walking distance from the ropeway base), Christ Church (one of the oldest churches in North India), Kali Bari Temple, Shimla State Museum, Scandal Point, the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (the historic Viceregal Lodge), and Chadwick Falls. Combining Jakhu Temple with a walk along Mall Road and the Ridge makes for a complete Shimla day experience.
